Fire Wood Permits

Passes and Permits - Fire Wood

Fuelwood or Fire Wood permits, followed by Christmas Tree permits, are the most frequently issued permits on the Forest.

Amount
There is a maximum of 10 cords of fuelwood per household per year. Permits may allow the felling of dead standing trees under 12 inches diameter breast height (4 1/2 feet off the ground) for these species: Douglas Fir, Ponderosa Pine, spruce, Alligator Juniper, White Fir and Subalpine Fir. Dead standing "shaggy bark" Utah Juniper (often referred to as 'cedar') and Pinyon Pine of any size may also be felled with a proper permit. It is often difficult to tell a dead aspen or oak from one that just lost its leaves in autumn.

Cost
The cost varies by district and type of permit desired. Contact your local district for more details. No firewood may be cut for home use without a proper permit.

Cutting Season:

The primary season for fuelwood cutting is Summer/Fall. Permits become available after the monsoon season begins each year - after the forest has received enough moisture to reduce wildfire danger. This is generally in Mid-July. All Summer/Fall permits issued will expire no later than December 31 of the year they were issued. Some districts may offer a winter permit, weather and snow pack permitting. These permits generally become available mid to late January and are only available at select districts.  Please call your preferred district for more information on permit availability.  Fuelwood permits are NOT available year-round so please plan ahead for your winter needs.
