FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Coconino National Forest released a draft revised Land and Resources Management Plan (draft forest plan) and accompanying Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for a 90-day public comment period. These documents and other information about the forest plan revision process are available at -- http://go.usa.gov/jHnY.

Following years of collaboration with the public, thirteen American Indian tribes, NGOs, local organizations, and Federal, state, and local governments, the draft forest plan was developed to:

  • Support ecosystem maintenance and improvement, including soil, watersheds, invasive flora and fauna, and habitat connectivity; and
  • Recognize the importance of the forest-community interaction, and focuses on the economic, social, and cultural aspects of importance to surrounding communities.

The DEIS evaluates four plan alternatives: the no-action, the proposed plan, and two other alternatives with varying levels of wilderness and other special areas, semi-primitive recreation opportunities, and human access, use, and infrastructure.

The public is invited to review the documents and to provide comments during the 90-day comment period which will begin the day the Notice of Availability is published in the Federal Register.  The exact deadline will be posted on the Coconino’s website once it has been determined.
