Winter begins tomorrow and night time temperatures are dropping into the 20's and single digits at higher elevations. Snow is forcast for the coming week and visitor should be prepared if they plan to travel through the forest. For the most current information see the news releases on this website's home page.
The majority of the Gila National Forest is open for recreation. For information regarding specific areas within the Gila National Forest, please contact 575-388-8201.
Aldo Leopold Wilderness / Silver Fire: The Aldo Leopold Wilderness is once again open. Forest Road 150 (also known as the Wall Lake Road or North Star Mesa Road) is open as are the campgrounds along the 150 road. NM State Hwy 152 is open. For road information call 511 from any cell phone inside New Mexico. See the news release on the home page for other road, trail and campground closures.
Gila Wilderness Area: The Gila Wilderness is open for foot and horseback travel. Visitors are cautioned to watch out for hazards associated with last year's Whitewater Baldy fire and the summer 2013 floods. See the news releases on the home page for the most current information and closures of trails and campgrounds. To inquire about specific trails call the Visitor Center at 575-536-9461.
The Catwalk National Recreation Trail currently closed due to rock slides and flood damage. Call the Glenwood Ranger District for additional information 575-539-2481.
Windy conditions mean extra caution with fire and any open flame. Be alert for lightning especially in the afternoons. Keep current on weather conditions. Check with local Ranger Districts for information before accessing remote areas. Report abandoned campfires or signs of smoke immediately.
Firewood
Firewood cutting permits for 2013 are valid through Dec 31, 2013. Permits for 2014 will go on sle on Jan 2, 2014. There is no legal wood cutting on Jan 1, 2014.
When cutting and transporting firewood on or from the Gila National Forest, you must have a current fuelwood cutting guide book, printed permit and load tags in your possession. Wood cutting permits are available at your nearest Ranger Station. Please stay on existing roads and be sure your equipment is in good working condition. Pay close attention to the weather as it can change dramatically this time of year. Please contact the nearest district office if you have any questions about firewood.
Hunting
Hunting season is year round on the Gila National Forest, with most of the 3.3 million acres open to public hunting and other recreation. It is highly recommended to wear bright clothing when camping, hiking, biking and horseback riding. Keep children and pets under close supervision at all times, especially dusk to dawn.
