Forest Plan Revision

The Kootenai and Idaho Panhandle National Forests have combined efforts to revise their respective land and resource management plans (forest plans). Welcome to the Kootenai and Idaho Panhandle Zone (KIPZ) website!

Need for Change

Forest plan revision is based on a "need for change". The need for change approach analyzes the full forest plans, but only proposed changes where adjustments are necessary. Monitoring and evaluation of implementation of the current forest plans has helped identify management concerns, new issues, new information and better ways to achieve land management goals and objectives.

Revised Forest Plan Documents Now Available!

The draft Records of Decision, revised Forest Plans, and final environmental impact statements (FEISs) are available on the Forests' websites. Hard copy or DVDs of the documents may be obtained from the National Forest offices. Select here to read the news releases in the Newsroom.

The documents, maps, and information on the objection process for each Forest are available here:

Objection Process

The KIPZ is using a Pre-decisional Administrative Review Process, also known as an “objection process.” The objection filing period for the revised plans ended November 26, 2013. For a list of objections received, a listing of designated "interested persons," and information about the objection resolution meetings held on April 29 and 30, 2014 please visit each Forest's respective page.

On September 8, 2014 the reviewing officer issued the response to objections, which includes direction to the Northern Rockies Regional Forester (deciding official). The reviewing officer’s response to objections is the final decision by the U.S. Department of Agriculture on the objections. Full text of the response is available in the Reviewing Officer’s Response to Objections. The Forest Service is currently working to implement the reviewing officer’s directions and expects to sign the final Record of Decision for the forest plan revision this winter if the additional work indicates the forest does not need to go back out to the public.
