Forest Plan Revision

The Kootenai and Idaho Panhandle National Forests have combined efforts to revise their respective land and resource management plans (forest plans). Welcome to the Kootenai and Idaho Panhandle Zone (KIPZ) website!

Need for Change

Forest plan revision is based on a "need for change". The need for change approach analyzes the full forest plans, but only proposed changes where adjustments are necessary. Monitoring and evaluation of implementation of the current forest plans has helped identify management concerns, new issues, new information and better ways to achieve land management goals and objectives.

Revised Forest Plan Documents Now Available!

The draft Records of Decision, revised Forest Plans, and Final Environmental Impact Statements (FEISs) will be available soon. Documents have been mailed to those who commented or are on our mailing list.  Documents are available online (link below).  Hard copy or DVDs of the documents may be obtained from the National Forest offices. Select here to read the news releases in the Newsroom.

Objection Process

As stated in our Notice of Intent to Revise our Forest Plans, the KIPZ has elected to follow the objection process outlined in 36 CFR 219.32 (the 2000 Planning Rule as reinstated in 2009). On March 23, the agency established a new planning rule (the 2012 Rule). The 2012 Planning Rule outlines the objection process at 36 CFR 219 Subpart B. The objection process is a predecisional administrative review process. Objections to the final plan and FEIS will be accepted only from those who have submitted written comments specific to the revised plan and EIS either during scoping or the public comment period on the draft. Click here for information on the objection process.
