Welcome to the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest!

The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest covers more than 1.5 million acres of Wisconsin's Northwoods. The Chequamegon side of the forest covers about 858,400 acres in Ashland, Bayfield, Sawyer, Price, Taylor and Vilas counties while the Nicolet side covers nearly 661,400 acres in Florence, Forest, Langlade, Oconto, Oneida and Vilas counties. Where is the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest?

Features

Storms damage Great Divide and Washburn Ranger Districts

In July, the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest was impacted by two storm events that caused significant damage to the Great Divide and Washburn Ranger Districts. The northern part of the Great Divide Ranger District and southern part of the Washburn District were impacted by heavy rain and flash flooding the evening of July 11. A second storm, during the early morning hours of July 21 with strong winds caused signficant damage to the Washburn Ranger north of Highway 2..


Prescribed Fire Management

After many years of fire exclusion, the U.S. Forest Service and other agencies are working to restore ecosystems with fire. Many native plants in northern Wisconsin have unique adaptations that allow them to withstand fire and even thrive after it. This in-turn allows the wildlife who depend on these plants for food and shelter to also thrive.
