The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest covers more than 1.5 million acres of Wisconsin's Northwoods. The Chequamegon side of the forest covers about 858,400 acres in Ashland, Bayfield, Sawyer, Price, Taylor and Vilas counties while the Nicolet side covers nearly 661,400 acres in Florence, Forest, Langlade, Oconto, Oneida and Vilas counties. Where is the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest?

Forest Service personnel continue to survey the damage and are in the process of clearing trees, branches and debris from roadways, trails, campgrounds, picnic areas and other recreation sites.

After many years of fire exclusion, the U.S. Forest Service and other agencies are working to restore ecosystems to pre-European settlement conditions. Many native plants in northern Wisconsin have unique adaptations that allow them to withstand fire and even thrive after it. This in-turn allows the wildlife who depend on these plants for food and shelter to also thrive.
