Schumaker Campground

Schumaker Campground, between Hamilton, Montana and Darby, Montana sits on the edge of Twin Lakes near the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness. It features 16 campsites, with two vault toilets and two handicap accessible sites in a forested area. Campsites have trails leading to the shoreline.  It is located near the Twin Lakes Trailhead, which leads into the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness.

Twin Lakes are popular for non-motorized boating and fishing.  Bring your canoe, kayak, SUP, and fishing pole. Twin Lakes is surrounded by mostly pine trees and scenic mountain views!

Maximum vehicle length 55'.

No Fee.  First come/first serve camping. Accessibility is not guaranteed. If Schumaker Campground is full, there are opportunities for dispersed camping along Lost Horse Road.

Lost Horse Road (FS Road 429) is a dirt road that is narrow and rough. Drive defensively. High clearance vehicles recommended.

Reservations

  • No fees.  Campsites are available on a first come/first served basis.
  • At least one person must occupy a camping area during the first night after camping equipment has been set up, unless permission has otherwise been granted by the Forest Ranger.
  • Camping equipment cannot be left unattended for more than 24 hours without permission by the Forest Ranger.  The Forest Service is not responsible for any loss or damage to personal property.

General Information

  • Motorized boats are prohibited on Twin Lakes. 
  • FS Road 429 (Lost Horse Road) is narrow, rough, and fairly steep in some places.

  • Recommend bringing bug/mosquito spray

Bears frequent the area - A Food Storage Order is in effect on all National Forest System lands within the Montana portion of the Bitterroot National Forest from March 1 - December 1 annually.

Open yearlong until closed by snow. 

Open 24 hours/day

  • Motorized boats are prohibited on Twin Lakes.
  • Camping is limited to 16 consecutive days. After 16 days, you must move 5 miles away from your camp site, as the crow flies.
  • Quiet hours 10 p.m. – 6 a.m.
  • Pets must be leashed in the campground.  Consider leashing dogs at all trailheads the first few miles of the trail to prevent user conflicts in congested areas.
  • No garbage service, pack it in/pack it out.
  • Food Storage Required
  • Campfires allowed depending on Fire Danger level.  Ensure your campfire is OUT before you leave.
  • Do not rinse or wash dishes/etc. out of the creek.  Do it on land.
  • Respect wildlife
  • Use of fireworks or other explosives is prohibited on all National Forest lands
  • Firing a gun is not allowed in or within 150 yards of a residence, building, campsite, developed recreation site, or occupied area, across or on a road or body of water, or in any circumstance whereby any person may be injured or property damaged.

Directions

From Darby, Montana travel 7 miles north on Highway 93. Turn west (left) on Lost Horse Road FS 429 and travel approximately 18 miles. Take the north fork (right) at the Lost Horse Guard Station onto FS 5605 and follow approximately 2 miles to the campground. 

From Hamilton, Montana travel 9 miles south on Highway 93.  Turn west (right) on Lost Horse Road FS 429 and travel approximately 18 miles. Take the north fork (right) at the Lost Horse Guard Station onto FS 5605 and follow approximately 2 miles to the campground. 

Travel Considerations

Forest Service Road #429 (Lost Horse Road) can be extremely rough due to many potholes and rocks. High clearance vehicles are recommended.
