Bear Spray

Based on research of bear encounters bear spray is the most effective tool for changing a bear’s behavior during an encounter. It is 92% effective at changing a bear’s behavior during an encounter, while other methods (including various firearms) have been found to be less effective.

Bear spray must be carried in an accessible location to be used effectively, as most encounters are a surprise and close-quarters. If it is inaccessible, you will have less time to react to an encounter.

Bear spray contains a chemical compound that is extremely painful when it comes into contact with the eyes, nose, throat, and skin.

When deployed, bear spray is expelled at a high rate of speed (60-70 miles per hour) and expands and rises to create a cloud between you and a bear.

It is important to spray toward the ground in front of a charging bear (at its paws) to ensure the gas has a chance to rise and expand in front of the bear.

The range of bear spray can vary. Refer to the manufacturer’s label for details.

Bear Spray and Bear Education Training in 360

The Forest Service “Bear Spray and Bear Education Training in 360” is a series of five, interactive, 360-degree videos, which employees can view on a phone/tablet, a computer, or a virtual reality (VR) headset. The videos provide information about various bear behaviors and educate and train employees on how to respond to a bear encounter based on the bear’s behavior. Note: The bear in the videos was a captive animal and wasn't harmed.
