Recreation Region: Big Belt Mountains

Thompson Guard Station

Located on the east side of the Big Belt Mountains, this cabin presents a wonderful getaway. A fairly large two-room cabin with a deck greets visitors and offers plenty of room. Thompson Guard Station provides a wonderful forest setting for nearby hiking, fishing, hunting and horseback riding. A series of small lakes are also located in the area. One lake, about a mile south is easily reached by vehicle. The other lakes can be reached by horseback or hiking. The cabin does have stock corrals. The small community of White Sulphur Springs is located about 17 miles away. Access to the cabin during the summer months is good and can be reached by driving through White Sulphur Springs or from the west over Duck Creek Pass (Road #139). During winter, snow closes the road but access from the east is maintained to within about 4 miles of the cabin. Snowshoes, cross-country skis, or snowmobiles will get you there in the winter months. Generally, Road #139 opens to vehicles about mid-June.

Current Conditions
Winter access to the cabin is via a 4-mile stretch of road passable by snowmobile, snowshoe, skis or dog sled.

Latitude / Longitude

Latitude: 46.51861111

Longitude: -111.2127778

Directions

Best access is from White Sulphur Springs:

Leaving White Sulphur Springs travel west on Highway #360. About 1.6 miles from town the highway makes a sharp curve to the right.  At this point go straight onto the gravel road. There is a Forest Service sign at this junction which reads: Gipsy Lake 14, Townsend 44.  Travel 6.5 miles on the gravel road to a junction with a ranch access road.  Stay to the right. As you drive the next 7.5 miles to the Forest boundary the road becomes more primitive. Within a quarter mile of the Forest boundary, a sign for Thompson Station will direct you to the right and onto Forest Road #383. Proceed about 0.6 miles to the gate and cabin.
