Ch-paa-qn Peak from Edith Peak Road #476
At 7996 feet, Ch-paa-qn (pronounced "Cha pa kwin") Peak marks the highest point on the Ninemile Ranger District and is a major attraction for hikers in the local area. From the summit on a clear day, a person can experience a panoramic view of the surrounding areas. "Ch-paa-qn" is a Salish name that means "Shining peak."
General Information
Parking is available at the trailhead. The trail does not climb directly to the summit of the peak, but rather skirts the southern side of this rocky viewpoint. Hikers can reach the actual summit by leaving the trail and rock-scrambling the boulders to the peak. Hikers are advised to pack adequate water and supplies when hiking this trail.

Directions
From Interstate 90, exit 82 at Ninemile, take Montana 10 west to the Remount Road. Turn north (right) and continue to the Ninemile Ranger Station. From there, continue north on the Edith Peak Road #476 for 2 miles to Stoney Creek Road #5490. Turn northwest (left) onto road #5490 and proceed 1.5 miles to road #456. Turn west (left) onto road #456 and drive 1 mile to junction with road 2178. Turn north (right) onto road #2178 and proceed 6.6 miles to trailhead. There are three trails that lead to Ch-paa-qn Peak; collectively, they are called the "Ch-paa-qn Peak Complex." Of the three, this is the easiest hike. There is one steep pitch, but it is otherwise a moderate hike passing through many habitat types. This trail is recommended for first-time peak visitors and children.
