Devil's Causeway
This trail is often used to connect the East Fork Trail No. 1119 to the Chinese Wall Trail No. 1803. The most direct and common way to access the causeway is out of the Stillwater Trailhead by taking the East Fork Trail 2.7 miles.
The Devil's Causeway is a unique geological feature left behind by past glaciation. A narrow strip of rock is all that now connects two sections of the Flat Tops plateau. At 11,600ft the terrain narrows to 3 feet across with drop-offs of hundreds of feet to either side. Crossing the causeway can be hazardous and involves high amounts of exposure.
The causeway has seen much higher visitation in recent years. Please stay on the trail and do not cut switchbacks to help preserve the fragile alpine environment. Bring proper footwear for when conditions are muddy.
Arrive early, parking at this area can fill up quickly. Park in designated areas only. Adhere to all parking signage, parking is strictly prohibited in the turn around area.
The causeway is located within the Flat Tops Wilderness, special regulations apply.
No camping is allowed within 100ft of lakes, streams, or trails.
The causeway is not passible for stock animals.
Weather can change rapidly in the Flat Tops. Come prepared and avoid thunderstorms while travelling above tree line.
Dogs must be under immediate voice control or leashed at all times. Please clean up after your pet.
Practice Leave No Trace techniques to prevent and minimize your impact on the land and to other visitors.
