Hagerman Pass
Hagerman Pass offers spectacular views of Turquoise Lake and three surrounding Wilderness areas: Mount Massive, Hunter-Fryingpan and Holy Cross. The road is very rough and high clearance four wheel drive vehicles are recomended.
In the 1880’s, the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad and Colorado Midland Railroad competed to see which railroad would reach Aspen from Leadville first. The Colorado Midland railroad crossed the Continental Divide initially through the Hagerman Tunnel and then later the Busk-Ivanhoe Tunnel which now is used as a water diversion tunnel from Ivanhoe Lake on the west side of the pass into the Arkansas River basin.
