May Queen Campground

May Queen Campground has 27 sites and is located at the far western end of Turquoise Lake in a shaded lodgepole pine forest at an elevation of 9,900 feet. It is near the Charles Boustead Memorial Tunnel and adjacent to a day use/picnic area, which offers easy angler access to the lake. You can also access the Turquoise Lake Nature Trail for a leisurely walk around the lake.

Firewood can be purchased at the campground. Facilities include picnic tables, fire rings and vault toilets. Accessible sites are located along the southern end of the campground loop. Usage is moderate during weekdays but heavy on weekends.

Dates are weather dependent. All services may not be available early or late in the season.

Call 877-444-6777 or visit recreation.gov at least four days in advance. A minimum stay on Friday and Saturday night is required on weekends. A three-night minimum stay is required on holiday weekends. Walk-ups are exempt from the nightly minimum.

General Information

For trailer dumping and water fill-ups, everyone must go to the Leadville Sanitation Building.

America the Beautiful Senior or Access Pass cardholders may receive a 50% discount off the camping fee only. The discount only applies to the fee for the campsite physically occupied by the pass owner, not to any additional campsite(s) occupied by members of the pass owner's party.

The following restrictions apply to this campground:

  • A maximum of eight people and three tents or one recreational vehicle (RV) and two tents are allowed per site.
  • Pets must be on a leash at all times within the campground.
  • No discharge of firearms or fireworks is permitted.
  • Only licensed vehicles can operate inside the campground.
  • Camping is not allowed behind a locked gate.
  • Remember to check fishing regulations before fishing at any body of water. For stocking reports and more information on regulations or fishing licenses, check out the Colorado Parks & Wildlife website.
  • No more than a 14-night consecutive stay is permitted in the campground.



$29 nightly fee per site for overnight camping, which includes two vehicles. A third vehicle is an additional $11 per night. RVs and ATV/boat trailers count as one vehicle.

Fees are payable by cash, check or money order. A self-service fee tube is available.

First-come, first-served sites must be occupied the first night.
