Rampart Range Recreation Area

The Rampart Range Recreation Area provides a unique setting for off-highway vehicle (OHV) enthusiasts to enjoy a variety of riding experiences. From intermediate to expert riders, ATV or motorcycle, the Rampart has something for everyone.

Please make sure you are prepared and ride within your abilities. Changing conditions, natural hazards as well as oncoming traffic may be encountered. Please become familiar with and obey all local rules and regulations.

Motor vehicle use maps (MVUM) are available for free at your local Forest Service office or online.

The Rampart Range Recreation Area appears on the following maps:

Dispersed camping is available in designated sites only for a fee. Camp hosts are located in the Flat Rocks Campground and at Rim Road.

Current Conditions
Rampart Range Recreation Area roads are closed annually by December 1 and remain closed throughout the winter. Roads reopen when conditions on the ground are favorable for summer recreation. A target date is April 1, but weather conditions may delay opening until late May pursuant to a "mud-season" closure order. The closure order is in effect April 1 to May 31 annually to provide resource protection for all National Forest System roads and trails in the recreation area.

General Information

Mid-May to December 1

Rampart Range Recreation Area roads are closed annually by December 1 and remain closed throughout the winter.

Roads reopen when conditions on the ground are favorable for summer recreation. A target date is April 1, but weather conditions may delay opening until late to May pursuant to a "mud-season" closure order. The closure order is in effect annually to provide resource protection for all National Forest System roads and trails in the recreation area.

All OHVs must be registered. For information on registration and permits, visit the Colorado Parks and Wildlife website

The Interagency Senior Pass and the Interagency Access Pass qualifies for a 50% discount at concessionaire run campsites. The discount only applies to the fee for the campsite physically occupied by the pass owner, not to any additional campsite(s) occupied by members of the pass owner's party.

The following restrictions apply: 

  • Park and camp in designated sites.
  • Trailhead and OHV staging areas are open sunrise to sunset.
  • Report after hours activities to the Douglas County Sheriff's Department.
  • Rampart Range Road has an annual winter closure

$22 fee for overnight camping in designated small campsites.

$33 fee for overnight camping in designated large campsites.

Fees are payable by cash, check or money order. A self-service fee tube is available for on-site payment. Scan and pay option is available.

Dogs must be on a leash at all times.

Getting There

Directions

From Denver, travel U.S. Highway 85 south to Sedalia. From Sedalia, travel U.S. Highway 67 west approximately 10 miles to Rampart Range Road. It is at the top of a hill and is well marked. To the north is the Forest Service Indian Creek Work Center. Turn south on Rampart Range Road to access the OHV trails and dispersed camping areas.

Travel Considerations

Use caution as there is limited visibility of oncoming traffic turning onto Rampart Range Road.
