South Colony Trail #1339

South Colony Trail #1339, in the South Colony Basin, is a 3.8-mile, moderately difficult nonmotorized/nonmechanized trail located in the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness. The trail accesses the South Colony Lakes and the surrounding peaks.

General Information

The Sangre de Cristo Wilderness was established in 1993 to preserve its quality, character and integrity. This area is intended to be a place with minimal human impact where natural processes are the primary influences. Human activity is limited to primitive recreation and travel. Please follow Leave No Trace outdoor ethics to ensure that this and future generations experience this special place in its natural condition.

Directions

From Westcliffe, CO, take State Highway 69 south for 4.5 miles to County Road 119 (Colfax Lane). Turn right onto County Road 119 and follow it until it ends. Turn right onto South Colony Road. There is trailhead parking on the right after about 1 mile. The road beyond this point requires four-wheel drive and high clearance and continues for another 2.5 miles to the South Colony Trailhead.
