Off Cow Camp Cabin

Off Cow Camp Cabin is a small cabin located in a high elevation meadow at 10,500 feet on Burro Creek near the moderate-to-difficult Burro Creek off-highway vehicle trail #873. The Fitton Cabin is located nearby.

The cabins must be accessed using the Burro Creek Trail #873. The trail is open to 50" width or less vehicles and non-motorized uses. The cabins are 6 miles from the north end of the trail and 1.5 miles from the south end. The trail is rough, rocky, and high elevation.

There are meadows, aspen groves and spruce/fir forests near the cabin. At 13, 200 feet, Bennett Peak sits southeast of the cabin. Fitton Guard Station is located 400 yards upstream from Off Cow Camp and is available as a rental cabin to the public.

The small, rustic cabin sleeps four (two bunk beds). There is a wood burning cook stove, outhouse, fire ring, table and chairs. There is no potable water. Natural sources of water should be treated before use.

The cabin has a several-acre, fenced pasture. The cabin is located within a grazing allotment and cows are frequently present in the area. 

To access the Off Cow Camp cabin, users must walk approximately 100 yards uphill from the Burro Creek Trail #873 to the cabin.

General Information

No trash service or receptacles.  Please pack out all garbage.

Firewood may be gathered in the surrounding area.

Caution: Bears frequent the area. Keep the cabin area clean. Store all food in secure, closed containers. Do not leave food outside the cabin.

A combination code is needed to access the cabin. Please check your confirmation letter for the combination code.

The surrounding area offers many recreation opportunities, including hunting, hiking, off-highway vehicle riding, horseback riding, mountain biking, and fishing. The Burro Creek off-highway vehicle (OHV) trails #873 connect many miles of OHV trails and forest roads in the area. The trails are also used by motorcycles, mountain bikers, hikers, and horseback riders.

Check in time is after 2:00 pm. Check out time is before 12:00 pm.

ATVs must stay on designated trails. ATVs or motorcycles cannot enter the fenced in cabin area or pasture/corral areas.

$25.00 per night. Recreation.gov charges a reservation fee.

Pets are allowed on premises under verbal control or on a leash. Pets are not allowed inside the cabin.

Directions

Access is from the upper or lower Burro Creek Trailheads (trail #873). From the west side of the town of Del Norte, head south on County Road 14 for 12 miles to the lower Burro Creek Trailhead. The cabin is 6 miles upstream from this trailhead and 1.5 miles from the upper trailhead. The upper trailhead is located 28 miles from the town of Del Norte and is accessed by Forest Service Roads 329 and 329.1C.

Travel Considerations

Occasionally mud and/or snow can impede access to the cabin. 

Parking

Vehicles may be parked at the north end of Burro Creek Trail #873 (37.545574, -106.503128) or at the south trail access at the intersection of Trail #873 and Road #329.1C (37.474336, -106.455389).

You may collect water from Burro Creek. Collected water must be treated before use.
