Elk Creek Overflow Campground

Elk Creek Campground is composed of three loops, including this loop for overflow camping.  Camping sites 29 through 42 are located in the loop and there is no fee for camping at these sites. Dispersed camping restrictions apply. Firewood may be available for a fee.

General Information

Fires must be kept in metal fire rings or designated areas.  Make sure your fire is "Dead Out" and cold to the touch before leaving the area.  Pack In/Pack Out your trash. This can be bear country. Remain "Bear Aware" and store food properly while camping.

Memorial Weekend - Labor Day weekend

Quiet hours are from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am.

Visit the USGS store for passes.

Single Unit:
Day Use: $12.00
Overnight Use: $29.00
Sites will have $2.00 additional weekend fee and $2.00 additional Holiday fee.
Reservations through recreation.gov will have a reservation fee of $8.00 per reservation.

Interagency Senior/Access Recreation Passes provide a 50% discount to single campsites ONLY.

*The discount applies only to the fee for the campsite physically occupied by the pass holder, not to any additional fee or campsite(s) occupied by members of the pass holder's party.

Interagency Recreation Passes are Honored for Day Use.

Dogs must be on leash not longer than six feet in length.

Directions

From Antonito, CO, take US Rt. 285 south 0.3 miles to State Rt. 17. Continue straight on Rt. 17 and go 22.6 miles to campground sign. Turn right at sign onto dirt road and 0.1 miles to a "T" intersection. Turn left and go 0.4 miles to a "Y" intersection. Bear right and proceed into campground. 

Travel Considerations

Motorized travel may be limited due to snow and seasonal road closures from March 15th to May 15th.

Potable water is available at this site.

Water available by hand pump. Water from streams and lakes should be purified before consumption.

Limited tables and grills on some sites.

Horse/Pack Animal Information

Horse/Pack animals are not allowed at this site.

Other Amenities

Elk Creek Campground is lightly wooded with spruce and some Ponderosa pines. The understory is grass with some sites located next to Elk Creek. The campground is convenient to the South San Juan Wilderness. The campground is excellent for destination or transient campers. Consider a day trip on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad (steam) which offers a 64-mile journey through abandoned mining towns.
