Black Canyon Trail #754

The Black Canyon Trail is 10.7 miles long. It begins at BLM and ends at Hayden Pass/Forest Road 970. The trail ascends Black Canyon to reach alpine terrain, then stays in the high country all the way to Hayden Pass. The trail does not access any lakes or fishable streams. Scenery is excellent from Nipple Mountain north to Orient Mine Bat Cave viewing area.

The trail is open for the following uses: Hiking, Horseback Riding, and Viewing Wildlife

Getting There

Directions

Take Hayden Pass Road (LL57) east from Villa Grove to FDR 970 to the top of Hayden Pass. Passable with 4 WD only. Hayden Pass is one of two motorized passes across the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness--Medano Pass being the other.

ALTERNATE access-take Valley View Road (CR GG) east from the junction of Hwys 17 & 285, go 3.2 miles to the dirt road with the sign "Orient Land Trust Bat Cave". High clearance/4 WD recommended. Trail is non-motorized at the Trail Head.
