Grizzly Creek Trail #814
The Grizzly Creek trail is 9.7 miles long and located in the Weminuche Wilderness. The trail begins at Thirty Mile Campground, ending at Grizzly Pass and the Continental Divide Trail (CDT, #813). This trail provides access to Fern Creek Trail (#815), the CDT and Grizzly Lake Trail (#890). The trail is well maintained and easy to follow.
The trail begins with a short climb from Thirty Mile Campground and drops quickly down to the Grizzly Creek bridge. The trail then follows a series of meandering climbs and descents before dropping to the valley bottom just after the 2-mile mark (near the junction with Fern Creek Trail). From this point, the trail gradually gains elevation as you approach the Continental Divide.
After dropping into the valley bottom, the trail parallels Grizzly Creek and offers nice camping and good fishing for Brown and Brook Trout. Elk and deer are also present in the valley; primary times for viewing are typically early morning and late evening.
At 6.5 miles in, you will pass the junction with Grizzly Lake Trail, which crosses the creek to the right. Travelers who wish to continue on Grizzly Creek trail should continue straight and not cross the creek here. The last ¾ of a mile are the steepest section of the trail, though well-maintained, switchbacks easily guide hikers from about 10,800 ft to the trail end at 11,200 ft Grizzly Pass.
While this trail is regularly maintained, due to the Spruce Bark Beetle, there may be downed trees at any time. Use caution when camping or traveling through this area as dead or damaged trees present serious hazards.
