Grizzly Lake Trail #890
The Grizzly Creek trail is 3.8 miles long. Beginning at a junction 6.5 miles in on Grizzly Creek Trail (#814) and ending at the Continental Divide Trail (CDT #813), the Grizzly Lake Trail lies deep within the Weminuche Wilderness, with good access to camping near Grizzly Lake (please abide by Weminuche Wilderness regulations and avoid camping within 100 ft of any water source), fishing, and the CDT. The trail and lake names are formerly known as Sq---.
The trail immediately crosses Grizzly Creek after the junction. There is no bridge to cross; horses and hikers will have to wade across. Use caution during high water and note that the creek may not always be crossable.
After crossing Grizzly Creek, the trail makes a steady, gradual climb. Frequent switchbacks reduce the steepness of the 1,500 feet elevation gain from the trail’s beginning to Grizzly Lake. From Grizzly Lake to the Continental Divide, the lower segment is very steep for about ½ mile after crossing the Grizzly Lake Dam. The upper segment is a gradual, steady climb to the Continental Divide.
The final segment is not defined well, but hikers should have little trouble spotting the Continental Divide Trail in the open area above Grizzly Lake.
A parking area is located within Thirty Mile Campground and pack stock unloading and packing facilities are located ¼ and ½ mile, respectively, along the Rio Grande Reservoir Road just before reaching the campground.
While this trail is regularly maintained, due to the Spruce Bark Beetle, there may be downed trees at any time. Use caution when camping or traveling through this area as dead or damaged trees present serious hazards.
Permitted use: foot and horse travel
