Magdalena RD Magdalena Mountains

The Magdalena Mountains, south of the town of Magdalena, rise sharply from an elevation of 6,600 feet to 10,783 feet at the summit of South Baldy Peak. Vegetation varies from piñon-juniper communities at lower elevations, to ponderosa pine at intermediate elevations, to Douglas-fir, white fir, spruce, and aspen in the uppermost elevations. 

Passes & Permits

Water Canyon Complex has options for both day use and overnight camping. Fees apply. Please see posted information for more details. Reservations are available for the large group camping site, group picnic site, and several of the sites within the campground. See Recreation.gov for more details.

Complexes

Water Canyon is an area of recreation abundance. At 6,800 ft of elevation sits the Water Canyon Campground, one of five campgrounds on the District. Located between the towns of Socorro and Magdalena, this area is a popular recreation stop for those traveling across the state. With a campground, a picnic area, and access roads to multiple trails that offer opportunities for both lower elevation and higher elevation hiking experiences, there is something here for everyone.
