    Year-round camping and campfire restrictions are in effect for the Kachina Village and Pumphouse Wash area south of Flagstaff, between State Route 89A and Interstate 17, except within designated camping areas on Forest Road 237.

CAMPING AND CAMPFIRE RESTRICTIONS


Pursuant to 16 U.S.C. § 551 and 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(a), the following is prohibited on the National Forest System (NFS) lands in the Flagstaff Ranger District, Coconino National Forest, described below and shown on the attached map incorporated into this Order as Exhibit A:


PROHIBITIONS:

  1. Camping. 36 C.F.R. § 261.58(e)

  2. Igniting, building, maintaining, or using a campfire, charcoal fire, or stove fire. 36 C.F.R. § 261.52(a).

    Camping means the temporary use of National Forest System lands for the purpose of overnight occupancy without a permanently fixed structure.

    Campfire means a fire. not within any building, mobile home or living accommodation mounted on a motor vehicle, which is used for cooking, personal warmth, lighting. ceremonial, or aesthetic purposes. Fire includes campfire.

    Stove fire means a campfire built inside an enclosed stove or grill, a portable brazier, or a pressurized liquid or gas stove, including a space-heating device.


EXEMPTIONS:

Pursuant to 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from Prohibition (1) of this Order (Camping 36 C.F.R. § 261.58(e)):

  1. Persons with Forest Service Permit No. FS-7700-48 (Permit for Use of Roads, Trails, or Areas Restricted by Regulation or Order), specifically exempting them from this Order or a written determination by a Forest Service authorized officer that a permit is not required under 36 C.F.R. § 251.50(e)(1) or (2).

  2. Any Federal, State, or Local Officer, or member of an organized rescue or firefighting resource in the performance of an official duty.

  3. Persons within the Designated Camping Areas identified in Exhibit A (Loop 1, Loop 2, Loop 3, and Loop 4).

Pursuant to 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from Prohibition (2) of this Order (Igniting, building, maintaining, or using a campfire, charcoal fire, or stove fire. 36 C.F.R. § 261.52(a)):

  1. Persons with Forest Service Permit No. FS-7700-48 (Permit for Use of Roads, Trails, or Areas Restricted by Regulation or Order), specifically exempting them from this Order or a written determination by a Forest Service authorized officer that a permit is not required under 36 C.F.R. § 251.50(e)(1) or (2).

  2. Any Federal, State, or Local Officer, or member of an organized rescue or firefighting resource in the performance of an official duty.

  3. Persons using a stove, grill, or any fire implement that is solely fueled by pressurized liquid petroleum or pressurized liquid petroleum gas (LPG) fuels.

     

AREA DESCRIBED:

As depicted on the map in Exhibit A, the Described Area includes all NFS lands within the boundary starting at the intersection of Kelly Canyon and Interstate 17 (35° 04' 8.66" N, 111° 40' 58.87" W) in Township 20N, Range 7E, Section 32, thence following Kelly Canyon westerly to the intersection of Pumphouse Wash, thence, southwesterly along Pumphouse Wash to the southern boundary of Township 19N, Range 6E, Section 2 (35° 03' 13.28" N, 111° 43' 25.0" W), thence, westerly along the section line approximately ½ mile to the intersection with US Highway 89A (35° 03' 12.97" N, 111° 43' 57.66" W), thence northerly to along US Highway 89A to the intersection with the boundary between NFS and State Lands at the northern boundary of Section 35 of Township 20N, Range 6E (35° 04' 44.58" N, 111° 43' 47.43" W), thence easterly and northerly following the boundary between NFS and State Lands to the boundary of private lands at the northwestern corner of Township 20N, Range 6 E, Section 25, thence easterly along the boundary of NFS and private lands to the intersection of Interstate 17 (35° 05' 10.09" N, 111° 41' 14.82" W), thence southerly along Interstate 17 back to the point of beginning at the intersection of Kelly Canyon


Purpose:


The purpose of this Order is to protect public health and safety and resource integrity.


Implementation:

  1. This Order shall be in effect on May 1, 2025, at 08:00 AM, and shall remain in effect until April 30, 2035, at 08:00 AM or until rescinded, whichever comes first.
  2. A map identifying the Described Area is attached and made part of this Order as Exhibit A.
  3. Unless otherwise expressly defined in this Order, the terms used in this Order are defined by the regulations of the Secretary of Agriculture, 36 C.F.R. Chapter II, Parts 200-299. If there are terms in this Order that are not expressly defined in the Order or 36 C.F.R. Chapter II, Parts 200-299, their meaning shall be determined by their plain language definitions.
  4. A violation of the above prohibitions is punishable as a Class B misdemeanor by a fine of not more than $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for organizations, or by imprisonment for not more than six months, or both. 16 U.S.C. § 551; 18 U.S.C. §§ 3559, 3571, and 3581.

  6. This Order supersedes any previous Orders prohibiting the same or similar acts in the same Described Area.
