Laguna Post-Fire Summary Report is Available

Santa Fe, N.M., August 8, 2025— A Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team has completed their assessment of the Laguna Fire to identify and manage potential risks to resources on National Forest System lands and reduce these threats through appropriate emergency measures to protect human life and safety, property, and critical natural or cultural resources.  In addition to the BAER effort, additional staff are assessing vegetation impacts. A preliminary vegetation assessment has been completed

Most (81%) of the burned area experienced unburned, very low, or low soil burn severity located primarily in ponderosa pine forests. There are some areas, primarily where mixed conifer forests were present, that burned with greater intensity and experienced moderate (14%) or high (5%) soil burn severity. Both of these forest types are well adapted to fire. This mosaic pattern of soil burn severity and fire intensity is consistent with the natural effects of fire in ponderosa pine and mixed conifer forests in northern New Mexico.

The Laguna Post-Fire Summary Report is available as an incident publication and can be downloaded as a pdf file at https://inciweb.wildfire.gov/incident-information/nmsnf-laguna-wildfire. Updated information about the Laguna Fire operations, soil burn severity, maps, closure information, and BAER information are provided at the same site.

Public Safety Advisory: The fire suppression operation is continuing, a public safety closure order is still in effect, and the summer monsoons can create hazards extending beyond the fire area.  Everyone near and downstream from the burned area should remain alert and stay updated on weather conditions that may result in heavy rains and increased water runoff. Flash flooding may occur quickly during heavy rain events-be prepared to act. Current weather and emergency notifications can be found at the National Weather Service website: www.weather.gov/abq/.
