Cave Falls Campground
Cave Falls Campground is nestled along the banks of the Fall River, about 24 miles east of Ashton, Idaho, near the Wyoming border. Situated within the Caribou-Targhee National Forest’s Ashton/Island Park Ranger District, this campground rests at an elevation of 6,200 feet, accessible by traveling east from Ashton on ID-47 for 5.7 miles, then following Cave Falls Road (E 1400 N) for 17.6 miles, with the last 12 miles on gravel.
Natural Features: A forest of lodgepole pine and aspen fringes the campground, offering partial shade along the swift, deep waters of the Fall River. Just two miles east, the 20-foot-wide Cave Falls plunges over a basalt ledge in Yellowstone National Park, its roar echoing through this grizzly bear country where the wild meets the serene.
The Fall River invites anglers with its rainbow and cutthroat trout, while the campground’s proximity to Yellowstone’s southwest corner—via the Bechler Ranger Station two miles northwest—opens trails to the remote Cascade Corner, famed for waterfalls and backcountry splendor. Wildlife abounds, with bears, moose, and elk roaming the area.
Facilities: The campground offers 23 single-family sites, each equipped with picnic tables, campfire rings, and grills. Vault toilets, drinking water, bear-proof storage boxes, and a dumpster are available, with no host on-site in this grizzly habitat where food storage precautions are a must. Roads and parking spurs are gravel, accommodating RVs up to 40 feet.
