Third Creek Group Campground
Third Creek Group Campground is located 12 miles northeast of Malad, Idaho, within the Caribou-Targhee National Forest’s Westside Ranger District. Situated at an elevation of approximately 5,000 feet, it is accessible by traveling 3.5 miles north of Malad on Interstate 15 to Exit 17, then east on Weston Highway for 7 miles to Upper Deep Creek Reservoir, followed by a left turn onto Forest Road 231 for 1 mile to the campground entrance.
Natural Features:
The campground sits in an open, flat area within Weston Canyon, near the banks of Third Creek and close to Deep Creek Reservoir. Scattered pines and hardwoods frame the site, providing a mix of open space and partial shade. The surrounding landscape offers views of rolling hills and distant peaks, with seasonal snow blanketing the area in winter.
Recreation:
Third Creek Group Campground is a gateway to outdoor activities, with the adjacent Third Creek Trailhead providing access to the Oxford Peak Trail System. This network is open to hikers, mountain bikers, motorcyclists, and off-road vehicle users, with hitching racks available for horseback riders. Deep Creek Reservoir, just 1 mile away, offers trout fishing, boating, and swimming opportunities. The area is also ideal for wildlife viewing and exploring the natural beauty of the region.
Facilities:
The campground features one group site that can accommodate up to 125 people, making it suitable for gatherings or events. It includes a large picnic shelter, tables, and grills, along with three single vault toilets and potable water spigots. The site is accessible via a paved Weston Highway and a 1-mile stretch of well-maintained gravel road, accommodating RVs and trailers with ease. A gate secures the entrance, with the access code provided upon reservation confirmation.

Firewood Permits: Firewood permits are available to purchase from the Westside Ranger District June 1 through November 30 and allow the collection of wood that is standing dead or dead/down on the ground. Purchase is a minimum of 4 cords of wood for $25.00 with a maximum of 8 cords per household. You must have a map and brochure of the Ranger Districts you will be cutting in and the Caribou-Targhee Terms and Conditions.
Federal Passes: *America the Beautiful Pass (Annual, Senior, Access, and Military Passes) will waive fee to picnic areas and trailheads. Senior passes waive camping fees by 50% at campgrounds in the forest. Federal Recreation Passes can be purchased at any ranger district office or at Recreational Passes | USGS Store.
ATV's or ORV's are allowed on designated trails only. No riding in campground. Vehicles and RV's must park in developed parking lot only. All equipment must stay in designated parking area. No horses in campground. All pets must be on a leash. All vehicles and RV's must park in designated parking lot only.

Directions
Go 3.5 miles north of Malad, Idaho. Take exit 17 (Weston Highway) off I-15, and go east on Weston highway. Stay on Weston highway for seven miles to Upper Deep Creek Reservoir. Turn left on Forest road #231. Go one mile to Third Creek Group Site Campground. Weston highway is paved and the road to the campground is a good gravel road (one mile) and easy access for motor homes.
