Willow Flat Campground

Willow Flat Campground is nestled along the banks of the Cub River, about seven miles southeast of Preston, Idaho. Tucked within the Caribou-Targhee National Forest in a scenic valley, this popular campground sits at an elevation of 6,300 feet, accessible via Cub River Road (Forest Road 406) off U.S. Highway 91.

Natural Features: A mixed forest of pines, spruce, and hardwoods casts partial shade over the campground, while dense stands of willow line the Cub River’s banks, a favorite haunt of local moose. Deer and elk roam the surrounding hills, adding to the wild charm of this picturesque retreat framed by rugged mountains.

Numerous trails begin within the campground, including a half-mile nature trail to Sam Parkinson Spring and the multi-use Cub River Trail, offering prime hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and off-road vehicle adventures. The Cub River Trail connects to the renowned 55-mile Highline Trail, while the river itself provides excellent fishing for wild cutthroat and hatchery rainbow trout.

Facilities: The campground offers six group sites accommodating 24 to 100 people and numerous single-family sites, each equipped with picnic tables and campfire rings. Vault toilets and drinking water are provided, and an amphitheater with bleacher seating and a cement platform sits at group site G03. Roads and parking spurs are gravel.
