Porter Fork Trail #305

Elevation gain of 2.400 feet. Leashed pets are permitted, however please see the restrictions for this canyon. Major destinations include Mount Raymond and Gobbler's Knob. Trail junctions include the Desolation Trail. The Porter Fork Trail follows an old mining road that leads to the upper end of the Porter Fork drainage. The trail takes off to the left of the road and continues up to join with the Desolation Trail. This trail can be used to gain access to other trails between Mill Creek Canyon and Big Cottonwood Canyon.

Trail Length: 3.63 miles

$ 5.00 / car. Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation employees collect the fee as you exit the canyon. Annual passes are available through Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation by calling (801) 483-5473, or you can purchase one as you exit the canyon.

This trail enters a designated wilderness area, special regulations apply. Watershed restrictions apply and are strictly enforced when you cross the ridge into Big Cottonwood Canyon. There are several mines along the Porter Fork Trail, but the State of Utah recommends that you do not enter them for your safety. Dogs: Dogs are restricted from the groomed ski trail on ODD numbered calendar days during the winter. Dogs must be kept on a leash at all trail heads and developed sites including parking areas. Please pick up after your dog, your Canyon appreciates it! Drop boxes are provided. Other trails for dogs. Bikes: Big Water, Little Water, and the Great Western Trail are CLOSED to mountain bikes on ODD numbered calendar days.

Directions

Access #1: Via Mill Creek Canyon Road (3800 South Wasatch Blvd.) about 4.2 miles up the canyon to Porter Fork turnoff. Park along Mill Creek Road, vehicle access up to Porter Fork Road is permitted only to Porter Fork residents. Walk up Porter Fork Road until pavement ends about 1.25 miles. Trail begins here and follows the jeep road. Access #2: Via Desolation Trail: In Mill Creek from Thayne Canyon; in Big Cottonwood Canyon from Mill B North Fork, Butler Fork, or Mill D North Fork Trail.
