The Angeles National Forest hires full-time permanent and seasonal wildland firefighters at various times throughout the year. Wildland firefighters operate in dynamic environments including mountainous and urban areas. Specialized equipment such as fire engines, fire crews, and aircraft are used to attack complex fires. Becoming a wildland firefighter requires a high level of fitness and a commitment to safety.
Wildland firefighters respond to fires and disasters nationwide. There are no state lines to limit your boundaries and learning experiences. Different types of firefighters have different job titles. For example, an entry-level wildland firefighter is generally hired as a "Forestry Aid / Forestry Technician." To begin your journey, follow the easy steps provided below.
Requirements:
- Requirements: U.S. citizens, minimum 18 years of age, high school diploma or equivalent, and other requirements
- Selected candidates are subject to background checks, drug testing, and physical fitness-testing.
- Basic training is provided for entry-level positions.

Fire Hire 2026 Opening and Closing Dates for Applying
This outreach is for GW-0462-03/04/05 Wildland Fire Apprentice Program (WFAP), GW-0462-03/04 with promotion potential to GW-0462-05 through GW-0462-10 and WG/WL-5716-8 & 10 current career permanent fulltime and fuels positions. The vacancy announcements for these positions are posted on the U.S. Government's official website for employment opportunities at USAJobs. These will be regional and national vacancy announcements with opening and closing dates.
The vacancy announcements will be open for applications on August 22, 2025. Those who wish to be considered for these positions in the Fall Fire Hire event must apply to the vacancy announcements by the closing date of September 23, 2025.
Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) and Forest Service – FireProgram Management (FS-FPM) qualifications must be met at the time of selection. If you are selected, you may be required to submit an updated IQCS record or signed certified task book as proof of attainment of IFPM requirements prior to final verbal offer.
