Forest Service Responds to Multiple Wildfires Following Lightning Storms in Northern California

YREKA, Calif., July 1, 2025 — Wildland Firefighters are responding to multiple wildfires on the Klamath National Forest with a coordinated effort of ground crews and aerial resources following widespread thunderstorms and lightning on the afternoon and evening of June 30, 2025. Approximately 3,860 lightning strikes were recorded across the forest between 7 a.m. June 30 and 7 a.m. July 1.

Happy Camp Ranger District

  • Caroline Fire – Located on the east side of Grider Creek, in Caroline Creek. The fire is approximately two acres and burning in an area with multiple snags. It is highly visible from the community of Seiad Valley, CA. Two hand crews, patrol, and a dozer are assigned to the fire, supported by a helicopter conducting bucket drops.
     
  • Springs Fire – Smokejumpers are actively working the fire; 3 small fires totaling one-half acre in an old fire scar. It is located five miles upstream from the Grider Creek Campground.
     
  • Jackson Fire – Burning north of Slater Butte Lookout. Currently at one tenth an acre ground fire, burning snag; two engines and a patrol plus one actively engaged in the fire.
     
  • Ridge Fire – Two snags, along Grider Creek Ridge near the intersection of Frying Pan Ridge Road.
     
  • Shanty Fire – South of Blue Mountain near Grider Ridge. Smoke Jumpers working their way to the fire.
     
  • Tims Fire – Near Tims Peak/Four Mile Creek. Ordering Smoke Jumpers for this fire.
     
  • No Name Fire – Within the Grider Creek/No Name Creek area, near Blue Mountain four miles south of Seiad.
     
  • One other fire has been reported but not been confirmed, the district fire staff is actively attempting to locate.

Oak Knoll Ranger District

  • Currently no fires discovered on the district. One fire engine from Oak Knoll is assisting CalFire on the Rider Fire.

Goosenest Ranger District

  • Nest Fire – Located on the south side of Goosenest Mountain. Firefighters have fully contained the one tenth acre fire following retardant drops by air tankers and bucket work by a helicopter on Monday night. Crews are currently mopping up the area.

Salmon-Scott River Ranger District

  • Summit Fire – Reported at approximately 2.2 acres, this fire is near Summit Meadow Lake, close to the Pacific Crest Trail, about 3.5 miles southwest of the Shackleford Trailhead. Smokejumpers on scene, preparing to fly in interagency hotshot crew and being supported by local aircraft.
  • Grouse Fire – Located three miles south of Eddy Gulch Lookout. Wildland Firefighters are on scene single snag less than one-tenth acre in patrol status. 

These fires follow a period of significant lightning activity across the Klamath National Forest. With thunderstorms still in the forecast, new fire starts may be detected in the coming days.

Weather Outlook

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for this afternoon due to the potential for another round of thunderstorms, some of which may be dry with strong, gusty outflows. The highest risk areas include Siskiyou and Klamath counties.

Temperatures are expected to trend cooler today, with breezy northwest winds continuing into Wednesday and Thursday. Isolated afternoon thunderstorms are possible east of the Cascades throughout the week.
