Glen Alpine Trailhead

Glen Alpine Trailhead is located on the south end of the Lake Tahoe Basin near South Lake Tahoe, and serves as an entry point for Desolation Wilderness. From South Lake Tahoe, take Highway 89 north approximately three miles to Fallen Leaf Road. Watch for bicyclists, pedestrians and other cars on this narrow, one-lane road. Keep going around the south end of Fallen Leaf Lake, then turn left before the bridge and continue toward Lily Lake to the trailhead.

Many different hikes can be taken from this starting point. For a short walk, take the southern spur three miles to Grass Lake or stretch the hike to six miles all the way to Lake Aloha. Another moderate spur takes you to Half Moon or Alta Morris lakes. A third spur takes you to Gilmore Lake and then on to Dicks Pass. At Gilmore Lake another trail heads up the backside of Mt. Tallac, which offers a moderate approach to the summit.

A wilderness permit is required to enter Desolation Wilderness. Day hikers may pick up permits at the trailhead kiosk. Overnight hikers should obtain an overnight permit before arriving. Hard-sided bear canisters are required for all overnight visits. Campfires (wood, charcoal or any other solid fuels) are not permitted.

Current Conditions
