WILLOWS, Calif., Jan. 13, 2025—With a spell of dry conditions in the weather forecast, forest officials are expecting an increase in off-highway trail use and have noticed an increase in unregistered vehicles. Officials remind riders that all vehicles must be registered and licensed by the California Department of Motor Vehicles to ride on public OHV trails.
Electric motorcycles, such as those manufactured by Sur-Ron, Talaria, Segway, and E Ride Pro, are considered off-highway vehicles (not electric bikes or mopeds) and must be registered with a CA Green Sticker through the DMV.
Riding a vehicle on OHV trails without proper vehicle registration is against the law, and riders may be subject to citation.
Information about registration of electric-powered motorcycles is available on the California State Parks website at https://ohv.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=26886.
A bulletin issued in April 2024 also has information about Off-Highway Electric Motorcycles Classification, Registration, and Operation: https://ohv.parks.ca.gov/pages/1234/files/OHMVR%20Electric%20Off-Highway%20Motorcycle%20Bulletin%20Volume%2024%20Number%201-Final.pdf.
