Cabot Lake Trailhead
Cabot Lake Trailhead provides access to the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness and several trails as well as lakes, including Cabot Lake and Carl Lake.
Provides access to:
- Cabot Lake Trail
- Jefferson Lake Trail #4001
- Shirley Lake Trail #4003
Trails accessed via this trailhead leave the Deschutes National Forest across Jefferson Creek and enter the Warm Springs Indian Reservation.
Recreationists will enter Mt. Jefferson Wilderness shortly after leaving the trailhead. Wilderness Permits are required. See "Permit Info" below for more details.
General Information
Day use only; no overnight camping allowed
There are two types of entry permits required between June 15 and October 15 for entering the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness from this trailhead.
- Overnight Use
- Central Cascades Wilderness Permit between June 15 and October 15.
- Day Use
- Free, self-issue Wilderness Permit (available at the trailhead) between June 15 and October 15.

- Wilderness restrictions apply in the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness.
- Pamelia Lake – No camping within 100 feet of high-water mark of lake or any other water source
- Campfires are prohibited above 5,700 feet and within these lake basins:
- Marion Lake
- Ann Lake
- Table Lake
- Motorized and mechanical equipment (including bicycles and drones) are prohibited in the Wilderness
- Groups must be under 12 people and 12 head of stock
- Build campfires at least 100 feet away from water
- Pack in / Pack out!
- “Take only pictures, leave only footprints” — please refrain from cutting, damaging, or gathering vegetation or other forest items (e.g. rocks, artifacts, etc.)
- Please bury human waste 6-8 inches deep and at least 200 feet away from water

Directions
From Sisters, Oregon: follow Highway 20 northwest for about 12 miles, then take Forest Road 12 north to Forest Road 1230 (near Jack Creek). Cabot Lake Trailhead is at the end of Forest Road #1230.
