Gray Butte Trailhead
The trailhead is located in the southern portion of the Crooked River National Grassland, just south of Forest Service Road 57 and less than 1/4 mile east of the intersection of Forest Service Road 57 and Forest Service Road 57-500. It's near the old McCoin homestead and orchard.
Access from Gray Butte Trailhead includes Gray Butte Trail (#852), through which the Cole Loop Trail (#854) and Smith Rock State Park can also be reached.
There is a small gravel parking lot that can accommodate small trailers if there are not many visitors already in the lot.

Directions
From Madras, Oregon:
Head south on Highway 26 for approximately 15 miles.
Turn right onto Forest Service Road 7960 (Lone Pine Road).
Follow for approximately 0.25 miles.
Turn right onto Forest Service Road 57.
Follow Forest Service Road 57 for approximately 3.3 miles.
The trailhead is on the left side (south) of the road across from the apple orchard at the old McCoin homestead. The orchard is ringed with poplar trees.
From Prineville, Oregon:
Head north on Highway 26 for approximately 12 miles.
Turn left onto Forest Service Road 7960 (Lone Pine Road).
Follow for approximately 0.25 miles.
Turn right onto Forest Service Road 57.
Follow Forest Service Road 57 for approximately 3.3 miles.
The trailhead is on the left side (south) of the road across from the apple orchard at the old McCoin homestead.
The orchard is ringed with poplar trees.
From Smith Rock State Park
The trail can be accessed from Smith Rock State Park.
Follow the trail on the north side of the Crooked River to a trail leading up a draw connecting to Burma Road.
Hike the road to the top.
Gray Butte Trail takes off to the right from the highest point on the road.
