Salal, Ferns, and Greenery Permits
The Siuslaw National Forest offers a wide variety of greenery that is commonly harvested for the floral industry. Although there is no specific season for harvesting any of these forest products, ferns and huckleberries are best to harvest in late spring through early summer and salal is best to harvest from fall through early summer.

How to Obtain a Permit
Salal, ferns, and greenery permits can be purchased from the district office where you plan to harvest from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. When purchasing, you must provide a valid identification card issued by a state or U.S. federal government and your vehicle make, model, and license plate number.
Where to Harvest
- Do not harvest greenery within 200 feet of recreational sites (trails, campgrounds, picnic and day-use areas) or streams.
- Harvesting is prohibited in Botanical Areas, Research Natural Areas, wilderness areas, scenic areas, and land other than designated on the map received with your permit.

How to Protect the Forest While Cutting
- Harvest products in a caring and ecologically sound way by cleaning any debris may cause. Only remove 25% of plant.
- Pack garbage and food scraps out with you.
- Follow the terms and conditions on your permit.
