Black Swamp Fire Update – April 29, 2025

Release Date: April 29th, 2025

The Black Swamp Fire has grown to approximately 950 acres with 40-percent containment on the Croatan National Forest, 7 miles southeast of the Town of Maysville, North Carolina.

Crews continue to reinforce and extend control lines, as dozers work through the saturated and soft ground. About 100 acres of scattered spot fires have been identified outside the containment area, but firefighters are creating wet lines to hold them in place by spraying water in the unburned areas surrounding the fire.

Two helicopters are assisting with suppression efforts today. Seventy-five personnel from the USDA Forest Service, North Carolina Forest Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are currently assigned to the fire, with additional resources locally and from around the country arriving today.

The National Forests in North Carolina temporarily closed Black Swamp Road and the Black Swamp OHV area. The safety of both visitors and employees is the Forest Service’s first priority during a wildfire situation, so the public should avoid this area and use extra caution if traveling nearby while crews work to contain the fire.

Smoke from the fire can cause limited visibility and may impact local air quality. Drive slowly and use caution on roads where smoke may be settling. The public can check for air quality alerts at https://airquality.climate.ncsu.edu/ or https://fire.airnow.gov.
