Penokee Mountain Trail
The Penokee Mountain Ski Trail is in the snow belt of Lake Superior, so it typically offers some of the earliest skiing on the Great Divide Ranger District. Situated on the northern edge of a valley, the trail presents spectacular views of the surrounding area. An overlook next to the parking lot also offers a great view of the valley.
This is a stacked loop system with 3.2 km, 5.1 km and 8.6 km options. The trail is groomed and tracked for classic technique skiing. Snowshoers and fat tire bikers may also use the trail, but they should avoid the groomed track.
For the 2021 winter recreation season, the forest welcomes dog skijoring at the Penokee Mountain Ski Trail. Skijorers should clean up after pets and repair any paw-damaged ski tracks. The Great Divide Ranger District welcomes feedback from all trail users.
Despite its location in rugged terrain, the trail is suitable for skiers of moderate ability. Only the 8.6 Km loop has climbs and downhills that demand intermediate skills.
