Seneca Rocks
Seneca Rocks is one of the best-known landmarks in West Virginia. These rocks have long been noted as a scenic attraction and are popular with rock climbers.
The rocks are a magnificent formation rising nearly 900 feet above the North Fork River.

Open year-round during daylight hours.
- Alcohol is prohibited.
- No camping is allowed.
- No open fires outside designated grill areas.
- No saddle or pack animals.
- No bicycles.
- Parking or leaving a vehicle along either side of Roy Gap Rd. from Highway 28 to private property is prohibited.

Recreation Opportunities
Fishing - River/Stream Info
“Catch and release” is the only type of fishing allowed in this area. All fish must be returned to the water and only artificial lures may be used. Possession of bait is illegal. The area is patrolled by West Virginia Conservation Officers. Special area regulations may be found in the West Virginia fishing regulations brochure available at the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center.
Viewing Wildlife Info
This area can often attract bald eagles and other large birds of prey that can be seen flying near the North Fork river.
Viewing Scenery Info
The observation platform high atop the Seneca Rocks offers spectacular views of the surrounding North Fork river valley. Fall is an especially good time to hike up to see the vast expanse of turning leaves. Even if you do not wish to hike up, the Rocks can be enjoyed right from the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center.
Interpretive Areas/Exhibits Info
As you walk up the trail to the top of the Rocks make sure to stop at the signs scattered throughout the trail that will provide insight into specific natural formations among other things. Check out the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center to learn more about the area's rich history and nature.
Day Hikes Info
The Seneca Rocks Hiking Trail begins at the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center, crosses Seneca Creek to the picnic area, and climbs to an observation platform near the top of Seneca Rocks. This 1.3 mile (2.6 miles round-trip) trail uses steps and switchbacks to gain over 700 feet in elevation. Although steep, the trail can be enjoyed by visitors of all ages. Please, for your own safety, do not venture beyond the observation platform unless you have climbing gear and know how to use it. Keep youngsters close by while hiking this trail.
