Avalanche Danger Elevated
Pinkham Notch, NH – April 6, 2024 The USFS Mount Washington Avalanche Center (MWAC) is advising the public to be aware of elevated avalanche danger in the Presidential Range of the White Mountains this weekend. Due to the recent spring storm and ongoing unsettled weather, the avalanche danger in the Presidential Range will remain elevated through at least Monday, April 8. The Tuckerman Ravine Trail, which passes through Tuckerman Ravine, climbs steep slopes that are at risk of large avalanches. People are urged to make informed decisions based on these conditions and be prepared for extreme weather and winter conditions.
With the anticipated numbers of visitors to the area this weekend rescue operations, including emergency medical services, may be delayed, or limited due to road congestion from Sunday through Tuesday. Late winter, to spring weather patterns in this region are particularly unstable and unpredictable. The higher summits are currently experiencing full winter conditions, including deep snow, ice, and cold temperatures. Crampons and ice axes are essential if hiking on trails leading to the summit of Mount Washington. Hikers should always check the latest avalanche forecast and hikeSafe.
Stay informed about changing conditions by visiting the Mount Washington Avalanche Center, and the Mount Washington Observatory for the higher elevations weather.
