| Aquatic Organism Passage Workshop: Guidelines for an Effectiveness Monitoring Protocol | |||
| Background – Restoration of aquatic organism passage through culverts is a major focus of improving aquatic ecosystems in the United States. The cost of restoration has totaled hundreds of millions of dollars, with further work to be done on hundreds of thousands of structures that may act as barriers to aquatic organism movements. This massive investment has been motivated by the potential benefits of restoring access to aquatic habitats blocked by road-stream crossings. The challenge at this stage is to evaluate if restoration methods are producing crossings where individual aquatic organisms move as freely as they do under natural conditions. If possible, we would also like to verify that aquatic populations are actually benefitting from these efforts. | |||
