Empire underburn project to continue

Release Date:

QUINCY, CA – May 8, 2017 – Weather permitting, Plumas National Forest firefighters will conduct a 150 acre understory burn, northeast of Quincy, CA on Wednesday, May 10, 2017, beginning about 9:00 am. The burn will be very visible about midway up the south facing slope of Mt. Hough.

Burning itself is expected to last one day while light smoke may linger 2-3 days. Smoke will likely travel northeast to north, with some smoke settling into Genesee, Indian and American Valleys in the evening.  Smoke will be monitored although there should be no significant smoke impacts to the communities.

This project is within the Empire shaded fuel break (defensible fuel profile zone/DFPZ). The  underburn is designed to reduce surface woody fuels and small trees in the area and will look similar to burning done along SR 70 north of Quincy several weeks ago.
