Winter Recreation Opportunity Spectrum Maps
What are Recreation Opportunity Spectrum Maps?
Recreation Opportunity Spectrum Maps are a Forest Service planning tool designed to help manage recreation activities. All recreation activities typically fall within a spectrum of use that helps categorize those activities for planning purposes. The spectrum includes six categories: primitive, semi-primitive non-motorized, semi primitive motorized, roaded natural, rural and urban. Each area category includes specific criteria for remoteness, size, evidence of humans, visitor management and visitor density. These areas are defined in the National Winter Recreation Opportunity Spectrum (ROS) Inventory Mapping Protocol direction.
