Conclusions
The Nalgene container with the foam liner will keep
aerosols from escaping and will contain the liquid pepper derivative.
The propellant will discharge from the container but will not incapacitate
any operator. The Nalgene container with a foam insert is a simple and
inexpensive solution to the problem of transporting bear repellent spray
canisters. This is the MTDC-recommended safety container. Appendix
B includes a drawing of this container.
The PVC safety container will keep inadvertently released
aerosols from escaping and potentially incapacitating an operator. An
air valve should be incorporated in the design. The valve allows pressure
to be relieved after changes in elevation, making it easier to open the
container. This container will totally contain the pepper spray and propellant,
but will be more costly to manufacture than the recommended Nalgene container. Appendix
A includes a drawing of this container.
Adding a filter would remove the irritating aerosols,
but would add cost and complexity. The filter is not a recommended alternative.
