Firefighters share many of the risk factors that are associated with increased oxidative stress in other populations (Figure 5). Research to directly document the influence these risk factors on firefighter health is lacking. Until such research is accomplished, a prudent and conservative approach should be adopted to emphasize increased dietary and possibly supplemental intake of antioxidant nutrients for firefighters.
