| Title: |
Southern Appalachian White
Pine Seed Source Study
|
| Objective: |
1) To determine the sources of white pine that are best adapted
to growing on poor hardwood sites in West Virginia (WV).
2) To determine the possible existence and nature of genetic
variation in southern Appalachian eastern white pine. |
| Year Established: |
1968 |
| Year Completed: |
expected to continue |
| Site Description: |
Location on Fernow Experimental Forest is on the lower end
of Wilson Hollow Road near Parsons, WV. Soils are mapped as
Calvin channery silt loam. Latitude, longitude, and county name
available for seed source parent stands.
11 acres total; 50% to 60% steep south-facing slopes having
a site index of about 65 for oak. |
| Statistical Design: |
11 acres total. Trees planted in a randomized complete block,
replicated 7 times, with each seedlot represented by a 4-tree
row plot. Seedlings planted at a spacing of 8' by 8' in 4-tree
row plots parallel with the environmental gradient. A 2-tree
wide border of undesignated WV source seedlings was planted
around each of the 7 blocks. |
| Likelihood of Locating Study Areas: |
100% |
| Experimental Treatments: |
The first tree in each source was permanently marked: 1969.
Basal spraying using 2,4,5-T ahg. on 1.0" to 5.0" d.b.h. stems:
late April 1969.
Mistblowing to competing vegetation: Aug., 1969, Aug. 1970.
Cutting of 1 to 5 inch d.b.h. Stems on study area that were
not deadened by previous mistblowers or basal spray treatments.
General hand mowing of the study area: Aug. 1972. |
| Sampling Methods: |
Seed from 32 stands (98 families of white pine) were obtained
from Maryland, West Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina,
Georgia, and Virginia. Seeds were planted in 1968.
Each surviving tree was measured in height to nearest 0.05'.
Data were summarized by computing the average total height for
each source and plot in each block. Two-year averages were compared
to compute annual growth and four growth classes were developed
to better visualize the results.
Increment cores (1977) were systematically sampled from 937
trees. Weight and radial growth measurements were made. Radial
growth measurements were made using Ames dual-linear dendrochronometer. |
| Variables and Sampling Frequency: |
Independent: Treatments, site class.
Dependent:
First year seedling mortality:1969.
Height and survival: 1969, 1970, 1972, 1973, 1974.
Browsing: 1969, 1970.
Increment cores (weight and radial growth): 1977.
Height and d.b.h.: 1977.
d.b.h.: 1993. |
| QA/QC Practices: |
Data are visually compared to previously collected data. Accuracy
assessments are completed after each data-collection period.
Permanent employee continually supervises temporary employees. |
| Data Storage: |
Raw: stand structure and grade, species, d.b.h., and number
of stems available on DG. Species, d.b.h., And number of stems
are in hardcopy. Data are downloaded to PCs for analyses. |
