various characteristics, after overstory removal.
2) To follow the survival, growth and development of individual
spruce-fir. |

| Site Description: |
Compartments 7A and 7B on the Penobscot Experimental Forest
in north central Maine. Forest type is spruce-fir. Both compartments
were previously managed as farm woodlots using the shelterwood
system of silviculture. |
| Statistical Design: |
Initially 25 0.001-acre plots on each of the 2 compartments.
After second harvest was completed, a total of 50 0.001-acre
plots were measured annually for 5 years on each of the 2 compartments. |

| Experimental Treatments: |
First cut of a 2-stage shelterwood was performed to convert
the area to even-age management on both compartments: 1968.
Removal of trees in the remainder of the stand as would occur
normally under a shelterwood cut: 1979. |
| Sampling Methods: |
Numbers of seedlings were recorded by species and size class.
The following size classes were used: 6" to 1', 1.1' to 2',
2.1' to 4.5' ht, 4.6' ht to 0.5" d.b.h. Seedlings <6" were
sub-sampled and counted by 1" size classes in a permanent circular
plot 1.5 meters in diameter (0.0002 hectares) in the center
of each 0.001-acre plot. After 1980, each plot received a slash
rating (none, light, moderate, moderate to heavy, or heavy)
during spring 1979. |

Independent:
Initial numbers of seedlings, of a given species and size class
(per plot/per acre) as measured in the spring of 1978.
Slash-condition rating of plot.
Height.
Root collar diameter.
Crown diameter.
Tree species.
Dependent:
Number of seedlings of a given species ( red, white and black
spruce were not separated) and size class per plot/per acre
as measured annually.
Total Height (to the nearest cm).
Maximum crown width (to the nearest cm).
Diameter growth at root collar (to the nearest mm).
100% pre- and post- harvest inventory of seedlings: 1978
and 1979.
Growth measurements: 1979 to 1983 (annually).
