| Title: |
Stand Improvement,
Semi-Permanent Tally Strip, Orzetti Sale
|
| Objective: |
To determine the rate of recovery of the residual stand following
a heavy glaze salvage thinning and the effects of future wind
or glaze storms on this reserved growing stock. |
| Year Established: |
1937 |
| Year Completed: |
expected to continue |
| Site Description: |
Kane Experimental Forest; Compartment 7. In 1937, stand age
was about 40 yrs. In 1937, red maple, yellow-poplar & birch
were very even-age. Ages estimated from quadratic average diameter
were 46, 45 & 49 yrs. respectively. Cherry was much older
calculated at 69 years using same quadratic method. The distribution
of sugar maple in the 1" to 5" or 6" class gave an estimated
age of 49 yrs, and the distribution above 6" indicated a remnant
of a very old stand. The beech distribution from 1" to 4" also
indicates a 44 yr. age; the remnant above 4" also indicates
a very old stand.
Elevation of the area ranges between 1900' and 2020'; the
plots are at 2020'.
|
| Statistical Design: |
10 0.1-acre plots totaling 1 acre in a strip or transect.
The strip of plots runs due north 10 chains along cruise line
16, crossing the glaze salvage cutting windrows at right angles. |
| Likelihood of Locating Study Areas: |
100% |
| Experimental Treatments: |
Severe glaze storm: March 17-19, 1936. Removal of 65 square
feet of basal area per acre: 1937. |
| Sampling Methods: |
All stump measurements were converted to d.b.h. by means of
taper charts for the principle species. |
| Variables and Sampling Frequency: |
100% inventory of all trees or stumps > or = 1" diameter or
stump: species, d.b.h., frequency: 1937, 1942, 1947, 1952, 1957,
1962, 1977, 1984.
Photographs: 1937 (before cutting), 1938 (after cutting),
1952.
Damage record after severe glaze storm of 1950: 1950.
|
| QA/QC Practices: |
Data visually checked during computer data entry.
Angle irons were placed at all 0.1-acre lines in center of
tally strip.
Each plot corner was marked with fiberglass rods.
|
| Data Storage: |
Raw data by plot reside on DG and tally sheets are kept with
written instructions and detailed maps to each stand.
Annually, the raw data are transformed using the REGEN1 program
in DG Info. System. Summarized data by plot and by stand reside
in a DG-based program that can output to ASCII text files. |
