Allegheny Hardwood Forests

1) To determine long-term differences in the volume and value
growth and yield of Allegheny hardwood stands under different
management systems.
2) To determine the effect of these management systems on the
establishment of regeneration. |

| Site Description: |
Kane Experimental Forest and other locations on the Allegheny
Plateau. Forest type is cherry-maple, oak in transition. |
| Statistical Design: |
Randomized Blocks. Five treatments are tested on 4.9-acre
plots (1 treatment per plot). Each plot is replicated 6 times,
at 2 separate locations, for a total of 30 treatment plots.
Individual tree growth is followed on 1-acre subplots located
within each 5-acre treatment plot. Seedling counts are taken
on 20 0.001-acre subplots in each of the 30 treatment plots
for at total of 600 total subplots. |

| Experimental Treatments: |
The five treatments are: even-age management, two-age management,
single-tree selection, economic selection, group selection with
thinning between groups. Cuttings are based on a 20-year cutting
cycle for uneven-age management and 80-year even-age rotation:
1980, 2000, 2020, 2040, and 2060. |
| Sampling Methods: |
The overstory and regeneration will be inventoried before
treatment at each cutting cycle (20 years). In even-age management,
harvest cuttings will be scheduled so that all plots will be
harvested twice in an 80-year rotation. Selection cuts will
be made in all plots at 20-year intervals. Seedling counts were
measured by species and height classes. |

Measurements made during: 1979, 1984, 1990, 1994.
Independent: management strategy, structure, age, species composition,
stand density, site.
Dependent: basal area growth, periodic yield, (board feet, cubic
feet, dollar value) percent stocking and species composition
of the regeneration. |
| QA/QC Practices: |
Treatments were replicated. Data-entry into computer was 100%
cross checked with field sheets. |
| Data Storage: |
Raw data by plot reside on DG and tally sheets are kept with
written instructions and detailed maps to each stand. Annually,
the raw data are transformed using the REGEN1 program in DG
Info. System. Summarized data by plot and by stand reside in
a DG-based program that can output to ASCII text files. |
