| Title: |
Georgia Growth and Yield
Study
|
| Objective: |
1) To study upland oak in its southernmost range.
2) To demonstrate the proper techniques in thinning southern
Appalachian hardwoods.
3) To demonstrate real world tests of existing growth and yield
predictors. |
| Year Established: |
1979 |
| Year Completed: |
1993 |
| Site Description: |
Chattahoochie National Forest, Brasstown Ranger District,
near Blairsville, GA. Area is representative of the lower Piedmont
mountain chain of GA. Stands are uneven-age oak hickory forest
type. |
| Statistical Design: |
17 0.5-acre circular plots located in 2 compartments; 12 are
treated plots and 5 are control plots. Within each compartment,
all plots were selected to be as identical as possible in specie
composition and physiographic features. |
| Likelihood of Locating Study Areas: |
0% |
| Experimental Treatments: |
Stands were thinned to approximately 60 square feet of basal
area per acre. Identification numbers were stapled on the trees.
Each plot was photographed from all 4 cardinal points before
thinning: 1979. |
| Sampling Methods: |
Models developed from other plots are used to predict growth.
Remeasurement at 5-year intervals will check accuracy of the
predictions. |
| Variables and Sampling Frequency: |
Height, growth, diameter growth, cubic foot volume, board
foot volume, and stand development. |
| QA/QC Practices: |
Practices Field data are verified when entered into computer.
Field crews were trained by experienced field personnel. |
| Data Storage: |
Available data are maintained in an ORACLE database (SASQUATCH)
according to the following categories: study description, stand
density plot data, plot history, plot summaries, ingrowth summaries,
plot treatments, species descriptions, ecological data, size
of opening data. Hardcopy of some tally sheets are maintained
in file cabinets. |
