Evaluation of Silvicultural Treatments to Minimize Gypsy Moth Impact (WVU Study)
Objective: Evaluate the effectiveness of presalvage and sanitation thinnings on gypsy moth.

Site Description: West Virginia University Forest located north of Morgantown WV.
Statistical Design: Randomized paired block 
16 stands @ 20 acres each. 
4 presalvage thinning and 4 controls, 
4 sanitation thinnings and uncut controls
Likelihood of Locating Study Areas: 100%
Experimental Treatments: Gypsy moth defoliation on 6 of the 16 stands: 1990 & 1991. salvage thinning 4 stands, thinning 4 stands
Sampling Methods: 20 1/10-acre permanent plots per stand. 
60 0.0027-acre regeneration plots per stand. 
Measurements taken prior to thinning and defoliation: 1989 and every year for 5 years post disturbance (1990-1994).
Variables and Sampling Frequency: 1989-1994

possibly collect overstory measurements every 5th year.
QA/QC Practices: 100% cross reference between data entered in computer and data on field sheets. Errors are field verified. Field training for all data collectors
Data Storage: Raw and summarized data on hard disk. Symphony (spreadsheet) and SAS are used for analyzing. 6-7 high density diskettes in fireproof safe. Field sheets are kept in hardcopy.
