SILVAH is a computer tool for making silvicultural decisions in
hardwood
stands of the Allegheny Plateau and Allegheny Mountain region.
It is an "expert system" in that it recommends appropriate treatments
based upon user objectives and overstory, understory, and site data provided
by the user. SILVAH also contains a forest stand growth simulator,
provides
the ability to test alternative cuts, enables development of a forest-wide
inventory database, and facilitates other forest management planning
functions. The SILVAH system is described in a publication available
as a PDF here.
SILVAH Version 5.0, is available for download from our web site! SILVAH
is in the public domain and was developed on official US Government time.
A users guide is available using this link.
New Release Coming Soon!
A new release of SILVAH, Version 5.5, is coming
soon. This version will include analysis and prescriptions for
oak ecosystems, and will bring a Windows interface to the data-entry
portion of the software. It is not yet available online, but is
available on CD as a Beta version. As it is still a work in progress,
please expect bugs and changes as we continue to refine the
software. Click here for Help
on SILVAH Version 5.5 Beta.
***Special Note to users of the interim oak version of SILVAH
for DOS, Version 5.1.
A problem has been brought to our attention concerning the checkmark
regen tally system in SILVAH 5.1 for DOS. Some categories are not calculated
properly in terms of proportion of plots stocked with regeneration or
with interfering plants. These errors are also present in the narrative
summary in the output. We suggest you use version 5.0 for DOS to evaluate
all Allegheny and Northern Hardwood stands inventoried with the checkmark
tally system and obtain the Beta version of SILVAH 5.5 for Windows if
you are working in oak stands. We will be making that version available
on our site in the near future.
Attention Windows Me users!
Unfortunately due to the fact that Windows Me does not support real mode
device drivers, including ANSI.SYS which is required for all versions of
SILVAH, you will not be able to run silvah in this operating system without
booting from a floppy disk. For information on this issue and ways to work
around the problem see the problem
documentation page at Microsoft's site.
Please provide the following information before downloading SILVAH
A users guide to SILVAH is available and will be mailed to you if you would
like a copy. All information you provide here is for our mailing list and
will only be used to inform you of updates to the SILVAH program, and related
programs as they become available. We will NOT provide this information
to anyone for other purposes. You may leave this form blank if you choose
not to be included on the mailing list.
