Compatible Windows CE Data RecordersWindows CE data recorders, in general, come in two basic types: Handheld PC and Pocket PC. The Exams software will run on all type of machines described below, and runs best on machines that have the widest screen size. The San Dimas Technology Development Center has compared these and other devices. Handheld PCsThese machines come in 2 physical design sizes. Many are ruggedized to be capable of withstanding short term immersion in water. The first are generally a tablet design about 7 to 10 inches wide by 6 to 8 inches long by 1 to 2 inches thick. The screen is about 6 inches wide and 2.5 inches long. They have a mini QWERTY keyboard similar to a PC and have 1 or more PCMIA TYPE slots, 1 or more serial ports, infrared ports and some have USB. Examples are the Melard Side Arm and FEX21. Prices are from $1500 to $2500
The second is generally shaped like an hourglass and also has a keyboard, but it is not like a PC keyboard. They are generally bigger than the above, and the keyboard is configured differently. Screen size is about 4 inches wide by 3 inches long. All have serial ports. Not all have PCMIA slots or infrared ports. Examples are the FS4 and Juniper Allegro Pro. Prices are generally greater than $2800.
Pocket PCsThese machines are, as their name suggests, small enough to fit into a shirt pocket. Currently, few are ruggedized, but rugged models may be on the market soon. Cases are available to provide a rugged, water-resistant shell for these models. Most are about 3.5 inches wide by 5 to 6 inches long. The screen is about 3 inches wide by 4 inches long. Most do not come standard with a keyboard, but often a keyboard can be purchased as an accessory. There are some industrial machines that come standard with a numeric keypad. Some are now available with telephone-type keypads. Most use USB connections, some use serial connections, and Bluetooth and WiFi connections are becoming available. PCMIA Type slots can be attached as accessories or expansions packs with some models. If there is no external keypad available, the machines come standard with a virtual keypad. Some examples are the Hewlett-Packard or Compaq iPAQ (any model) and the Cassiopeia IT700. Prices range from $300 to $1900.
